Travelling to Germany in 2026: Pros, Cons and Visa Requirements
Certified translation of visa documents accepted by embassies
Germany is one of the most popular destinations for Egyptians – for tourism, family visits, business, study, medical treatment and skilled work. Before you go, you need the right visa and a well-prepared file, often including certified translations into German or English. This guide summarises the advantages and disadvantages of Germany as a destination and the essential requirements in 2026.
Advantages of travelling to or living in Germany
- Schengen access: a German short-stay visa lets you travel across the 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- Education: many public universities charge low or no tuition fees, and many programmes are taught in English.
- Career opportunities: Germany actively recruits skilled workers, nurses and engineers, with routes such as the EU Blue Card.
- Healthcare: world-class hospitals attract patients from across the Middle East.
- Quality of life: efficient public transport, safe cities and rich culture.
Disadvantages to consider
- Language: daily life, many jobs and most official procedures are in German.
- Bureaucracy: visa appointments, residence registration and document checks take time.
- Cost of living: rent in big cities such as Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin is high.
- Climate: long, grey winters can be a shock after Egypt.
- Waiting times: visa appointments can be booked out at peak seasons, so plan early.
Which visa do you need?
| Purpose | Visa type |
|---|---|
| Tourism, family visit, business trip, short course (up to 90 days) | Schengen short-stay visa (C) |
| University study, language course over 90 days | National visa (D) for study |
| Skilled employment, EU Blue Card, nursing | National visa (D) for employment |
| Family reunification | National visa (D) for family reunion |
| Medical treatment | Schengen or national visa depending on duration |
Applications in Egypt are submitted through the visa application centre used by the German Embassy in Cairo. According to the European Commission's Schengen visa page, the Schengen visa fee for adults is €90, you can apply up to six months before travel, and processing normally takes 15 days.
What is new in 2026: EES
The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Instead of passport stamps, travellers from outside the EU have their fingerprints, facial image and entry and exit dates recorded at the Schengen external border. Allow extra time at the airport on your first trip. ETIAS does not apply to Egyptian passport holders, because they need a visa anyway.
Documents that need certified translation
Documents in Arabic usually must be translated into German or English by a certified translator. The most common ones are:
- Birth and marriage certificates (family visits and reunification).
- Employment letters, commercial registers and tax cards (proof of ties to Egypt).
- Bank statements when issued in Arabic.
- Degrees and transcripts (study and work visas).
- Medical reports (treatment visas).
For long-stay visas, Egyptian civil and education documents may also need authentication by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legalisation through the German legalisation centre run by TLScontact. Frequently asked questions
Should I translate into German or English?
For most short-stay visas, English is accepted. For residence, marriage registration and many German authorities, German is required. Check your checklist; if unsure, choose German.
Can I apply for a German visa without translating my documents?
Not if they are in Arabic. Untranslated Arabic documents are a common reason for incomplete applications.
Does a Schengen visa from Germany let me visit other countries?
Yes, but you should apply to the country of your main destination, or the country of first entry if your stays are equal.
How do I avoid delays?
Book your appointment early, use recent documents and avoid common translation mistakes such as misspelt names.
